Sorry, I Won’t be Able to Dance With You Anymore

Sofia had her tonsils, adenoids, and tubes put in at the beginning of the month because she was having frequent ear infections. Initially, we were set on not getting any surgery. The specialist wasn’t going to sell us on a needless surgery.

Then, the hearing results came back and she had some hearing loss. The doctor said in those types of cases, antibiotics aren’t going to help. Plus, she still had fluid in both ears after being on antibiotics for over a week. So obviously, this ear infection we’ve been fighting since November wasn’t going to lay down its guns.

I really didn’t think her hearing was affected by this. She does talk really loud but so do I. She asks “What” often but I thought she was being silly when she did it.

Hopefully, this surgery, will alleviate all her pain she has probably been having and restore her hearing.

Onto surgery day.

I was more nervous about her getting all the drugs from being put to sleep than anything else. She wasn’t scared at all. Ya see, the surgery center has obviously done quite a few of these with little children. She had her choice of riding in a wagon, walking, or driving a jeep.

You know what my little girl chose…driving the jeep, of course – right into the walls.

They gave her a Dora balloon and pretty yellow socks.

After surgery, she was a little a groggy. She sailed through with flying colors, though. She ate a 2 popsicles and ice cream after the surgery.

Then it was time to go home. When they gave her choices of how she could go to the car, she was disappointed driving the jeep was not one of them. So she choose the over-sized wheel chair. Big enough for two cutie booties.

Later that afternoon after the older kids got home for school, Sofia was eating a popsicle. She was obviously not feeling very good. In a very sad strained voice she tells her older sister

Sorry, Hannah, I won’t be able to dance with you anymore.

She must have been feeling pretty low at this point. Probably the worst she felt the entire time. Also, the doctor told her she wasn’t suppose to run and jump. Their dancing involves lots of fancy trickery, stunts, throwing of Sofia, and who knows what else. I’m happy to report, she is dancing with her sister again!

The next couple of weeks sailed by smoothly.

She still shakes her head and tries to tell us, “The doctor told me I could only eat sugary stuff.” Of course, she would remember that the most. Though, he didn’t specifically say “sugary stuff.” However, all the things they recommended were sweets.

Where was this so called “setback” the nurses predicted? I never once voiced this opinion out loud during the recovery weeks dare I jinx ourselves. I was waiting. Waiting. It never came.

Sigh of relief was felt with day 14 passed with no setbacks. It is no day 18 and still no setbacks.

Apparently, we are part of the small percentage who doesn’t experience the horrible, horrible setback.

We are guessing maybe the sucking of the two fingers helped because she was swallowing constantly. Though, its going to cost us dearly in the long run for those costly orthodontic repairs.

Why is Peyton Manning Mad?

“Why is Peyton Manning mad?”

This is what my five year old son asks me when he comes into the living room last night. What an observant question.

I was really mad to see the Colts blow away a perfect season last night. I can imagine how a competitor like Peyton Manning felt. One thing I do know, is I.would.not. have wanted to be in the locker room after the game. I’m imagining creepy silence.

Then, the booing from the crowd when Painter came on the field. I don’t think they were necessarily booing the homegrown rookie quarterback but booing at the decision to take out the starters. Yeah, if Painter would have come out with 2 touchdowns and won the game, I think the booing would have ceased.

We kn0w from past experience when the Colts rest the starters, we don’t succeed. Why not learn from history?

I read tweets on twitter about the depth of our team when you take Peyton Manning out. Yes, Peyton Manning is important in many ways. Most of all for morale. You have confidence when Peyton Manning is playing.

When you have the back up quarter back or the back up to the back up quarterback playing, you kind of watch the game with your eyes half open. You cringe hoping that nothing terrible happens. Then it does.

Is the off chance that a starter might get hurt during a game with no meaning? But shouldn’t every game have meaning? Shouldn’t every game be played with 100% strength?

The only solace I receive from this loss is that the Steelers may not make the playoffs because the Jets won.

Is Santa Real?

“Is Santa Real?”

This burning question from a five year old. Instead of waiting Eli answers his own question. “Santa is dead.”

Ah, uh, okay. That is rather morbid.

“Santa is dead because last year I wasn’t good and I still got presents. If Santa was still alive, he wouldn’t bring me presents because I wasn’t good.”

Hmm. Interesting.

It kinds of continues the conversation from last year with this statement, “I wasn’t good this year but Santa still brought me presents.” We chuckled at this four year old’s statement.

So this year we are even more baffled? Maybe, a lump of coal this year would make him believe Santa IS real? I’m sure “Santa” is considering that possibility right now.

Oh, yeah, and I apologize to any parents in his preschool class. He has been having arguments with kids about this very subject.

Doubling Dating

I could probably have a blog just on the hilarious things that Eli tells us. Seriously. He has some outrageous stories. I really need to start documenting them better to torture him when he is older.

He comes home from preschool one day last spring and quips that “Meghan is doubling date me and Trey.”

So I replied, you mean Trey is going out with another girl?

“No, she is doubling dating both of us.”

Hannah, who is eleven, screeched, “Eli, that isn’t double dating, that is cheating.” Of course, then Hannah runs off to text Meghan’s older sister to tell her the latest Meghan/Eli drama.

His hopes were dashed. He stood there looking confused and defeated. But, really, preschoolers “dating.” The whole scenario is comical.

Mom, You look Beautiful

On our way into the Football game last week, five year old, Eli, complimented me out of the blue, “Mom, you look beautiful.” After I thanked him, he said the purple stuff you have on your eyes looks great.

Isn’t that cute! Hilarious that he even noticed that I used a purple shadow and from far away, I didn’t think you could really tell what specific color it was.

Sometimes he really surprises me! He wasn’t even wanting something!

I can ride with no training wheels

Last night, my mom had both of my youngest kids over to spend the night. Somehow Sofia maneuvered her way into going. I think it was the “I’m going to your house” in a sweet voice combined with her you can’t say no to me smile. Who can say no to that?

While we were doing the kid exchange in town, Eli kept asking me to go home and get his bike. Uh, no, we live across the county from my parents and I would be 35 minute round trip not including all the chit chat time! I suggested he offered my brother $1 to come to our house and get it. He doesn’t have anything better to do, ha!

After arriving at the house, Eli was bugging my dad and brother to drive to our house and get his bike. My dad, not knowing Eli had never rode a bike without training wheels, suggested Eli ride my youngest brother’s orange bike. My youngest brother (9) gives Eli a little push and he is off! Seriously, it was that easy. He wasn’t even wobbly or anything.

I was told he did have a few close moments but it doesn’t sound like anything we had with our two older children.

I feel a little guilty because Eli had been asking us to take his training wheels off his bike since he turned 5. According to Eli, once you turn 5 you can just magically ride your bike with no training wheels and he was right!

While this was all going on, the two older kids and I decided to make it movie night at our local theater, which is really cheap $2 for kids and $4 for adults. Plus, the concessions is just as reasonable. We watched Night at the Museum 2 and while it was funny and enjoyable and it was a little over the top!

It was odd to be a movie and not have to really chase anyone around. Hannah and Peyton sat in the third row with friends who were also at the movie. I sat completely by myself and was actually able to enjoy the movie. Minus the two times the kids wanted money from me for popcorn & cokes! It was really weird.
